What Did I Read In 2018? #bookblog #2018reads #goodreads #booknerd #books

So last year I was super busy writing a textbook, writing a thesis, and the rest. But I did manage to exceed my Goodreads challenge or 10 books.  I ended up reading 39.

Two of my favourite books was by Stephen King and Diane Chamberlain. Two books that I didn’t think I’d continue reading simply because I got the first plot twist and thought uh oh, this isn’t really something I’d read… However, I pushed on and was pretty much BLOWN AWAY.

The Outsider has had mixed reviews by others, and really that’s no surprise because we’ve all got our own likes and dislikes. If we didn’t the world would be a pretty boring place.  My opinion of it was that I loved how it started. Smack bang into some action, and I have to admit given my areas of research and interest academically, I wasn’t at all turned off by the brutality of the first few chapter.  I love when a story starts off with 36124936action, it’s a great way to draw readers and keep them interested.  Other authors have lost me sometimes because after that great action, they enter too much info on the characters and the settings and it drags things down. Obviously King is a master at the written word, and achieved this effortly.  I got lost in the world of this story, I didn’t want to put it down and go back to real life, LOL.  I found myself really enjoying each and every character, and they were all so different from one another.  I really had no idea, how King was planning to explain Terry’s supposed part in the crime, because it was really looking like it was him for a while, but he was pretty convincing that it wasn’t. The amount of times I said “WFT” out aloud was quite funny. My husband would be sitting mext to me and say, “What?” He’d listened to it on Audible and agreed that is was a pretty compelling read.

My other book of the year for 2018 was Diane Chamberlain’s The Dream Daughter.  I ugly cried in this one.  I was pretty invested in it thanks to the author’s use of an unborn baby 37638145with a series health issue in the womb, I mean who can flag a book when that’s at the heart of it? But when I got to Hunter’s plot twist, I was saying “WTF” but not in a good way.  I put the book down and had a serious think.  Normally, I would NEVER read a book with this in it, I know that some people have a real hard time accepting a story when it’s too unbelievable or strays too far away from fact which I’ve always found quite humorous considering that they’re reading fiction, however when I got to Hunter’s plot twist I thought I’d stop reading because it was too unbelievable. BUT I kept going and boy am I glad I did. It was a truly wonderful read.  I don’t want to give anything away, but at two points I slammed the book shut in disbelief, gasping “OMG, no way”, plenty of tears, and I laughed once.  Like King’s book, I found my self lost in the words of this book. I was reading this while away on a campy holiday with the family, so was able to finish it pretty quick, and I was truly devastated that it had to end. Although to my husband, who had to listen to me recap almost every chapter after I’d finished them, it couldn’t end soon enough!

Other books I read in 2018

2018 books

The Misbegotten Son by Jack Olsen was fantastic, probably my true crime pick of 2018. I absolutely loved Salem Falls by Jodi Picoult, the very last page, had be gasping “WTH” and then i was thinking about it, trying to go through everything I’d read whist I was trying to go to sleep trying to figure out how I should have picked that ending! Talk about plot twist. I wanted to really love A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult because I’d waited so long for it’s release, but the format just ruined it for me, and I wasn’t a fan of the constant heading hoping throughout chapters. It made it hard to get to know characters because you couldn’t sit with them long enough and it felt like you were ripped from them to get into another characters head.

But, it was a great selection of books. A whilst I didn’t mark them all 5 stars, it certainly didn’t mean I didn’t appreciate the hard work that every single one of those authors put into them.  They way I rate books is that they all start out with 5 stars, and then as I’m reading I subtract for various reasons i.e. too slow, information dump, cliche’, predictable etc. They can get those stars back though if I’m made to feel an emotion physically (say if I laugh or cry), surprising plot twist, awesome character development etc.  And obviously like I’ve mentioned we all score differently and have different opinions.  I’ll always look forward to trying another book by that author because it could always me the next “One”.

Did you read any of these books? What did you think of them and which was your favourite?

Bring on 2019 reads,

Nat

September was my Birthday Month

Yes, I’m still here! Crawling out of my study hole, to show you all a fabulous present I brought myself with my nan’s birthday money from last month. She specifically wrote in the card:

“Buy yourself something special (NO BOOKS)”

LOL… I brought a few books with it, I couldn’t not! But I also created myself a pillow for my library chair. The best thing I’ve brought yet! I can’t stop staring at it.

img_0971

Fabulous isn’t it! My family also went to Europe in September, and brought me this sweet bangle in Italy, complete with a little book charm. My mom said there was a heart on it originally, and then she saw the book charm and thought that was a more oerfect fit. I think she was right *wink*

img_0838

So, I’ll be uploading my hauls for August, September, and October in a week or so. Seeing as I’m meant to be on a ban, there shouldn’t be as many as in the past. I’ll admit, I haven’t stopped completely, let’s not go mad! LOL But I have cut back, only because of renovations and my wedding next year (my wedding dress turned up earlier in the week, AMAZING!).

Till next time, keep reading and buying

Nat 🙂

Thank you very much @wordsandlyrics for the tag, this is my first book blog one! Exciting.

The rules:

  • Mention the creator of the tag (Ayunda @ Tea and Paperbacks).
  • Thank the blogger who tagged you!
  • Choose one of the options, you don’t have to tell the reasons why you chose that but you can also do them if you want to.
  • Tag 10 other people to do this tag to spread the love!

1.Reading on the couch or on the bed?

Hmmmm, both! And reading in my study chair, library bean bag, and in the car on school pickups or after school sports

2.Male main character or female character?

Either. I don’t choose. I’m reading a book to leave my life for a period of time, I’m grateful to which ever character that makes me forget about the real world for that time!

3.Sweet snacks or salty snacks when reading?

Hmmmm anything and everything, lol. I go through stages which my fiance’ can attest to. At the moment it’s salt and vinegar popcorn, lol.

4.Trilogies or quartets?

I haven’t read either so I don’t have a preference.

5. First person point of view or third person point of view?

Most of my life it’s been third person I prefer. I tired first a few times and just couldn’t do it. I don’t feel like I can really ‘see’ the character in first. However, I have given first another go this year, and I didn’t mind it. So I’ll keep going and hopefully I’ll start to enjoy it more.

6. Reading at night or in the morning?

I read when I can! That’s usually after study which can be late pm, or early morning am (as in 4am after an assignment bender, lol). I do read in the afternoon while waiting for school to finish as well

7. Libraries or bookstores?

Both. Although borrowing from the library makes me sad because I just want to keep the books!

8. Books that make you laugh or make you cry?

Both. I like to experience all emotions.

9. Black book covers or white book covers?

In general, I prefer white because it’s fresh and light where as black is dark and heavy. I like my bookshelves white, I like my books any color ROFL

10. Character driven or plot driven stories?

To me, a book needs booth. A book is flat if it only has one or the other.

The Movie & The Book

safe_image.php

I’m one of those people who don’t complain about a book that’s made into a movie. Mainly because I can logically see the constraints that a movie has. A book can carry on a lot longer because words are descriptive, where as a movie has a time frame. To me, both mediums tell the story in a different way. Books with words, and movies with visual and audio.

I’d say sometimes, but really I’d be lying, that when I watch a movie I’m generally on the look out for phrases similar to “Based on the book by…” LOL. Which then entails me off on google searching for the book version of that movie. Needless to say, we all know I buy a lot more than I read. A LOT more. Doesn’t stop me from buying, and it never will!

But like I said I enjoy both mediums, so after having watched the movie I know one day I’ll go read the book too.

movie

I was watching a movie based on a true story called Gone in the Night with Shannon Doherty in it (Brenda from 90210) and saw that it was based on a book, so I of course went and brought the book, lol.

Happy Reading,

Creating my mini library…

So today I started the great unshelving of 2015 and turning my study into a study/library 😍 It’s been a massive job because I’ve got so many books…

I still had four shelves to take the books of when the pic was taken! Looking forward to finished results tomorrow 😍

Happy reading

On the Hunt for Bookends

So the semester is just about over for me. Two exams tomorrow and the day after, and one more next week and then I’m free to read for pleasure over the the next 9weeks. Can’t wait!

Whilst exam procrastinating I decided to look for bookends. I plan on reorganising my study to turn it into more of a… library! I might need some bookends 🙂 While hunting I cam across this awesome blog that details how to make your own from books, so that they look almost invisible. They do, don’t they.

Visit the blog here

jwsigpro_cache_94de85431a_invisible-bookends-1.jpg.pagespeed.ce.7RUQ-xF8RM

I’m not sure if it’s something that I can do, or rather be bothered to do, let’s face it I’m looking forward to doing nothing over the next 9 weeks but maybe I’ll change my mind!

If you decide to have a go, make sure you share the results with me either here or on my Facebook page

Until next time…

Happy reading and crafting!
