This or That Book Tag

Thank you very much @wordsandlyrics for the tag, this is my first book blog one! Exciting.

The rules:

  • Mention the creator of the tag (Ayunda @ Tea and Paperbacks).
  • Thank the blogger who tagged you!
  • Choose one of the options, you don’t have to tell the reasons why you chose that but you can also do them if you want to.
  • Tag 10 other people to do this tag to spread the love!

1.Reading on the couch or on the bed?

Hmmmm, both! And reading in my study chair, library bean bag, and in the car on school pickups or after school sports

2.Male main character or female character?

Either. I don’t choose. I’m reading a book to leave my life for a period of time, I’m grateful to which ever character that makes me forget about the real world for that time!

3.Sweet snacks or salty snacks when reading?

Hmmmm anything and everything, lol. I go through stages which my fiance’ can attest to. At the moment it’s salt and vinegar popcorn, lol.

4.Trilogies or quartets?

I haven’t read either so I don’t have a preference.

5. First person point of view or third person point of view?

Most of my life it’s been third person I prefer. I tired first a few times and just couldn’t do it. I don’t feel like I can really ‘see’ the character in first. However, I have given first another go this year, and I didn’t mind it. So I’ll keep going and hopefully I’ll start to enjoy it more.

6. Reading at night or in the morning?

I read when I can! That’s usually after study which can be late pm, or early morning am (as in 4am after an assignment bender, lol). I do read in the afternoon while waiting for school to finish as well

7. Libraries or bookstores?

Both. Although borrowing from the library makes me sad because I just want to keep the books!

8. Books that make you laugh or make you cry?

Both. I like to experience all emotions.

9. Black book covers or white book covers?

In general, I prefer white because it’s fresh and light where as black is dark and heavy. I like my bookshelves white, I like my books any color ROFL

10. Character driven or plot driven stories?

To me, a book needs booth. A book is flat if it only has one or the other.

Review – The Innocent Killer by Michael Griesbach

img_2267-1

If you haven’t heard of Steven Avery, and the NetFlix hit The Marking of a Murderer, then you must being living in a library! LOL. This case has been everywhere on the internet and social media, and not without it’s controversy.

In brief Steven was wrongly convicted of a violent sexual assault when he was 23 and spent 12years in jail for it when the real killer was on the loose and went on to assault at least one more women before he was jailed.  When he was released in 2003, after DNA cleared him, a short while after he was charged with the murder of Theresa Holbach and sentenced to life in prison.

This book by prosecutor for the state Michael Griesbach, was very well written, I thought. I’ve seen some review that have been quite scathing, mentioning his bias and lack of writers flair towards the end of the novel, as well as a personal opinion on the facts of the case.  But this review isn’t concerned with the rights and wrongs of Stevens case.  Personally, I’m on the fence with whether or not he murdered the victim. But the book was very pleasant to read. I thought the author had a particularly nice way with words. Was descriptive without being overly, and wrote about the case with attention to detail but not too much. I know there are true crime readers out there that don’t care for boring, technical legal jargon, which I think this author avoided.

I enjoyed the back story that was provided about Steven, as well as a personal side that the author shared about himself. Was there some bias? Quite possibly. But that’s down to interpretation, which most of life is.  To me, he wrote about the case as neutrally as I think he could and for me, that was very well because I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Yes, he believes that the right person is in jail, and that there wasn’t a a police conspiracy. He’s entitled to that opinion, because afterall, he knows a hell of a lot more than us readers do. I won’t comment on that with my opinion, I respect his right to it, I’m not going to argue it.

While it took me a while to finish this, if you’ve been following me on good reads, please don’t think it was because I didn’t enjoy it. That couldn’t be further from the truth! I’ve just got to find time to read for pleasure while I’m in the middle of semester and usually that’s a few minutes before I jump into bed in the wee hours of the morning. If you enjoy true crime, then I think you’ll enjoy this one!

So, how’s that new Kindle Oasis…

So the path that led me to my current Kindle Voyage, was a long an arduous one.  I’d previously tried a kindle three times before and just couldn’t get into in.  I was subconsciously blocking the experience but saying to myself, it’s not a book. Nothing beats the smell and feel of a book. I can’t show off my library. It’s not a book. It ain’t no book. I can’t do this… And then I started think think about the real advantages of them.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE my library and I’ll never be rid of it, but I started loving the idea of being able to carry a whole library around in my handbag.  I loved the idea of being able to get a book on kindle that is out of print of unavailable in hardcopy… The more I thought about it, the more I realised I really needed to give it a go. So I did.

At the end of 2014, I bought a Paperwhite.  It was hard at first. I couldn’t concentrate

when I read off the screen and I stopped after two weeks. Then I reminded myself of the pro’s and got back into it. After about two months, I slowly started coming around. Then at the 6month mark I was almost ready to say that I… Loved. It. Then when the new Voyage came out last year, I jumped at the chance to get it, because if you know me, you’ll know I’m obsessed with technology and feel the constant need to up-date to the most current of everything, LOL.

Kindle Oasis

And now, they’ve announced the release of the fancy new Kindle Oasis.  I have to admit, I’m loving it already and have already pre-ordered! It’s not for everyone, I know that some people have mentioned that it just doesn’t have enough new fandangle bits and pieces to warrant such an expensive price tag. But for me, all those little new bits and pieces add up, I love the thinner design, the charging case, the colors, the new spine-look, the page buttons, the led’s and the rest of it.  I’m definitely sold.

You often come across the memes on instagram and facebook debating which is better, the book or the ebook, and I don’t get why there’s the need for the comparison. Why can’t we love both just as much as each other? They both have their pro’s and con ‘s. Where one can’t do something, the other one allows for it.  There’s most certainly enough love in this bookworms heart and library, for both!!

My NTR Pick

So although I won’t get to this next book for a little while yet, maybe a week or two, I’ve chosen what read it will will be.

I’m quite critical of serial killer themed fiction. If it’s not done well, it comes off cliche and annoying. I’m apprehensive but I have heard good things, so I’m looking forward to it.

What’s your next to read (NTR)?

Happy reading
